2009 Hamper Appeal

Every Christmas Eve, local community organisation Micah Projects packs and delivers hampers to people it supported over the year and usually in sweltering heat! Micah Projects responds to individuals and families across Brisbane affected by poverty and disadvantage. This year a record 190 hampers will be delivered to suburbs in the inner city and as far as Lawnton, Logan, Wynnum, Caboolture, Laidley, Petrie and Deception Bay.

Each family sized hamper includes a laundry basket full of non-perishable food items plus a tub of fresh fruit and vegetables, a bag of Christmas gifts for the children and a Christmas cake. Past recipients have commented on the high quality of the hampers, with one mother saying that the items and brands were of a quality she often couldn’t afford to buy and that “the hamper and the spirit of generosity that goes with it, made our Christmas this year!”

Om Christmas eve morning Kurilpa Hall was packed with groceries, luscious stone fruit, fresh vegies, toys and willing workers to pack and wrap it all in cellophane for the volunteer drivers to deliver. Over 120 volunteers from the former St Mary’s Community, South Brisbane, now meeting at the Trades & Labour Council, lent a hand.

St Mary’s Community has raised over $6 000 and donated non perishable food items for the hampers. A further $8 000 has been raised from businesses and the general community to buy the groceries and treats that many of us take for granted at Christmas time.

“We deliver the hampers on Christmas Eve so that individuals and families have food in the pantry over the week between Christmas and New Year’s when many agencies are closed“, said Micah Projects’ Coordinator Karyn Walsh.

“The hampers are a gift for the Festive Season”.
